"Racing is about sportsmanship, said Spalding,  "Sportsmanship is the No. 1 goal." Spalding received Sportsmanship of the Year Award from the Shangri-La Speedway (now Tioga Motorsports Park) in 1988.

Rod who was injured at 42 just turned 55. "I still keep track of the time since my accident, it has been 13 years, 9 months, and 9 days, you don’t forget a date like that," said Spalding on July 31, 2002.

He has a great outlook on life and still has a great sense of humor. Spalding will never race again, but got his driver's license again 5 years ago. Spalding said, "I still love racing, it’s in my blood!

Favorite racetrack? "I like them all," says Spalding.
Advice for young drivers?  "Go fast – turn left – stay on it."

Spalding is a volunteer for:

Spalding who likes to travel -- particularly enjoys cruises.
